Implementing Social Competence Interventions for High School Students with Autism

Jessica Dykstra & Aimee Bord

High school students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) struggle with social competence skills which are critical to their post-secondary success. This presentation provides a summary of existing research, an overview of three pilot interventions, and implications for SLPs addressing social competence given the unique challenges of high school settings.

The session presented at the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention addressed three primary learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to discuss the challenges related to implementing social competence interventions in high school contexts with students with ASD.

Participants will be able to describe interventions and strategies that may be used to address social competence with high school students with ASD.

Participants will be able to describe ideas or solutions for meeting the challenges of implementing school-based social competence interventions with high school students with ASD.
